Tico – Umbrella Cockatoo

“Tough love” takes on a new meaning with Tico. This boisterous male Umbrella cockatoo has a busy beak and requires continuous activities to keep him engaged and busy. Not only does he love to fracture wood into tiny pieces, he also loves investigating boxes and new objects. Upon meeting, Tico’s blossoming raised crest and flexed contour feathers suggest excitement and curiosity, while the sound of his voice speaks otherwise; with the softest tone and clear pronunciation he will great you with a simple “Hi Tico”. Despite his soft side towards patient interactions, Tico’s a tough guy when it comes to the flock dynamic. Within the TGF outdoor aviaries Tico is known for acting big and making his presence known. This is a normal behavior for a bird in the wilds of the outdoors, but it doesn’t always serve Tico well with other cockatoos in his same flight. Tico has learned many things since his arrival at TGF in 2003, including stepping up. Given a patient and experienced caregiver who is familiar with the nuances of cockatoo behaviors, Tico is sure to display the cornucopia of speech and interactive behaviors he has learned in the decade-plus he’s been at TGF. He will no doubt continue to surprise and enchant those willing to keep him busy and challenged to keep up with him.
