Hannigan is one of TGF’s very special ambassador birds! Hannigan travels to a variety of events, educating our community about the wonderful, complex world of parrots.
Hannigan hasn’t always been the brave and charismatic bird that he is today. When he first came into our care, his personality was much like it is now – joyful, interactive and full of spunk. He was adopted out, but after an extremely short time, he was returned to us. When he came back his personality had dramatically changed. He displayed significant fear-based behaviors such as avoiding staff, was no longer willing to step up, kept to the back corner of his cage and he vocalized as if in distress if someone would intruded into his space. It was clear to staff that knew him so well that his short adoption experience had been traumatic for him and we would have to learn how to rebuild trust, be patient and let him guide us about his comfort level starting at the very beginning. It took over three years for him regain his confidence among us.
Because of the challenges Hannigan faced with that fateful change, our team made the decision to keep him as a permanent member of our sanctuary program, ensuring he always has the stability and biopsychosocial support he needs While we always strive to give our birds the opportunity to find homes, sometimes the best place for them is right here in our care ❤️
