A look at our finances
Over the five years, 90.0% of our spending went to our programs. That includes care and veterinary services for birds who live here permanently, adoptions and placements, taking in birds from unsafe situations, boarding, and education. In 2024 we had 12 employees and about 85 volunteers. We had no debt at the end of 2024, and no officer or board member is paid.
How our work is funded
Most of our funding comes from donations and grants. From 2020 through 2024, they made up 80.6% of our revenue ($3,566,266). Fees for services such as boarding, grooming and adoptions made up 18.8% ($832,800). Other income, including merchandise sales, was 0.6% ($25,906).
Contributions and grants include government grants of $103,549 in 2020 (a Paycheck Protection Program loan that was later forgiven), $94,637 in 2021 and $93,251 in 2022. They also include donated goods and services, such as food and supplies for the birds, recorded at their estimated value.
Where the money goes
Over the same five years, 90.0% of our spending ($4,052,122) went to program services. Management and general costs, including accounting, administration and similar overhead, made up 9.7%. Fundraising made up 0.3%, and we paid no professional fundraising fees in any of the five years.
| What the money paid for, 2020 through 2024 | Amount | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Staff salaries, benefits and payroll taxes | $2,579,294 | 57.3% |
| Contracted services, including veterinary care | $492,703 | 10.9% |
| Facility and occupancy costs | $366,983 | 8.1% |
| Animal care supplies | $292,972 | 6.5% |
| Office and administration | $184,581 | 4.1% |
| Accounting and legal | $181,979 | 4.0% |
| Depreciation of buildings and equipment | $165,413 | 3.7% |
| Insurance | $146,176 | 3.2% |
| Technology | $54,384 | 1.2% |
| Travel, licensing and other | $38,938 | 0.9% |
| Total expenses | $4,503,423 | 100.0% |
On the 2024 return, occupancy, insurance, travel, licensing and most technology costs are classified as management and general. On the 2021 through 2023 returns, the same costs were classified mainly as program services. If those management and general costs were counted as program services, the 2024 program share would be 91.9% rather than 78.7%.

Revenue less expenses shows each year's result on our returns. Year-end net assets also include other changes recorded on each return, such as changes in the recorded value of the birds in our care. That's why the change in net assets from one year to the next can differ from revenue less expenses.

Notes about the numbers
- Unless we name another source, the figures here come from our Forms 990 filed with the IRS for 2020 through 2024. Our fiscal year is the calendar year.
- We use the program, management and general, and fundraising amounts from Part IX of each return. The 2024 return groups some costs differently from earlier returns; see the note under Where the money goes.
- We round percentages to one decimal place, so the shares may not add to exactly 100%.
- The Charity Navigator rating shown here was listed on charitynavigator.org in September 2026. Ratings are updated as new returns are published.
