Meet Redgrave, a Congo Grey parrot who joined our flock in May of this year. In the past few years, TGF has accepted birds into our care from former caregivers who can no longer provide for themselves, let alone their beloved birds. These transitions are profoundly emotional for both human and bird. Red’s story is especially moving; he shared more than three decades of life with his person.
Whenever possible, we make every effort to honor and preserve these lifelong bonds. In our 30-year history, we have seen firsthand just how deep and enduring the connection between birds and their people can be and Redgrave is a beautiful example. We have facilitated two visits with his former owner, who now resides in memory care. During these moments, something extraordinary happens. Despite significant memory loss, Red’s person becomes fully present in his company, and for a few precious moments, the totality of their relationship shines. Watching them together feels like witnessing a living love story, one that perfectly captures the magic of these unique relationships.
Redgrave has earned a special place as one of our outreach ambassadors. When we see him with his longtime human companion, their interactions speak volumes about the life and love they built together. We understand that memory care residents may eventually regress, and when that time comes, we will be ready. For now, however, their mutual affection is unmistakable, bringing joy not only to them, but also to all of us who are fortunate enough to witness it.
Red has lived a life rooted in love and thoughtful care, and that history is reflected in the warmth and trust he now shares with our team. As he steps into his next chapter as a TGF ambassador, Red will continue to inspire a new generation of caretakers, inviting them to experience the profound joy of sharing life with these remarkable, long-lived companions.
